SEND and Inclusion

SENDCo - Miss Jo-Anne Lemon

SEND Governor – Mr John Mills

I am the Special Educational Needs & Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCo).  I work at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School 2 days a week.  I am also the Assistant SENDCo and SEN Unit Lead at another local school.  I have recently achieved the NASENCo Award (National Award for Special Education Needs Co-ordination).

My role at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School is to support teachers, teaching assistants and children to ensure all children can achieve their full potential and to ensure their needs are met.  I work alongside Mrs Darnell (Headteacher), Mrs Pickering (Learning Mentor) and Mrs Sumner (Family Support Worker) to help with strategies to support the children.  I regularly spend time with teachers, children and observing in classrooms to suggest ways which children can be supported.

I can be contacted at j.lemon@st-annes.lancs.sch.uk

SEND Areas of Need

A child has special educational needs (SEN) if they have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most other children of about their age.

SEND could mean that a child has difficulties in any of the following areas:

  • Communication and interaction – in expressing themselves or understanding what others are saying to them.
  • Cognition and learning – difficulties in gaining basic skills such as reading, writing and maths.
  • Social, emotional and mental health difficulties – difficulties making friends, relating to adults or difficulties with managing their behaviour and dysregulation.
  • Sensory and/or physical – such as hearing or visual impairment which may affect them in school.

Provision

We know that the earlier we identify SEND and provide the necessary support, the more successful our children will be.

At St. Anne’s, we provide high quality teaching in all classrooms to support all children. Our staff receive regular SEND training to ensure they have a high level of expertise and understanding in a range of SEND and effective strategies to support all children.

When a child requires SEN support, a Targeted Learning Plan (TLP) is designed for them. This is developed with the SENDCo and parents and identifies strategies to support children and describes the targets the child is working to achieve.

If the child has input from outside agencies, their recommendations, where appropriate, are implemented and included on their TLP.
